Topic

Scaling Your Database with SQL Azure Federations

Abstract

Traditionally when we talking about scaling a database, we talk about getting a bigger machine.   Discussions of sharding the database are typically greeted with groans.  With SQL Azure Federations, database sharding doesn’t have to be painful at all.  SQL Azure Federations allows us to scale our database tier in a way previously reserved for the application tier.  In this session, find out what it means to scale out a database instead of scaling up.  We’ll get a grip on the concepts, what it means for your application, and see database sharding via SQL Azure Federations in action!  We’ll also review a few of the newest updates to SQL Azure.

Speaker

Michael Collier is a Windows Azure MVP and serves as a National Architect for Neudesic, a Microsoft SI partner that specializes in Windows Azure. He has nearly 11 years of experience building Microsoft-based applications for a wide range of clients. Michael spends his days serving as a developer or architect – helping clients succeed with the Microsoft development platform. He gets very “geeked up” about any new technology, tool, or technique that makes his development life easier. Michael spends most of his spare time reading technology blogs and exploring new development technologies. He is also an avid golfer and attempts to be good at shooters on the Xbox 360. Previous speaking engagements include Central Ohio Day of .NET, Central Ohio .NET Developers Group, Cloud Connections, DevConnections, Cloud Expo, and multiple Windows Azure Boot Camp events. You can follow Michael on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/michaelcollier and on his blog at www.MichaelSCollier.com.
